Citrix Releases XenMobile

Citrix has released an all-encompassing solution for mobile device and application management. The underlying device management aspects are due to the technology acquired from the recent purchase of Zenprise in January 2013.

XenMobile will give users device choice while also enabling IT to meet its management and compliance requirements. XenMobile MDM joins other Citrix solutions, including Citrix CloudGateway™, Citrix NetScaler®, Citrix XenDesktop®, GoToMeeting®, GoToAssist®, Citrix ShareFile™, and Citrix Podio™, providing organizations with a single vendor for all of their enterprise mobility needs.

Users are demanding the freedom to choose their own devices, use any app and access their e-mail and documents from anywhere. Organizations require a solution that addresses these user expectations, while also meeting IT needs for security. XenMobile MDM provides the foundation to address these needs through role-based management, configuration and security of corporate and employee-owned devices. The solution is built on a highly secure architecture and integrates directly with Microsoft Active Directory and public key infrastructure systems, as well as security information and event management tools. With XenMobile MDM, users can self-service enroll their devices and IT can provision policies and apps to large groups of devices automatically. IT can blacklist or whitelist apps, detect and protect against jail broken devices, and wipe or selectively wipe a device that is lost, stolen or out of compliance.

In addition to XenMobile MDM, Citrix now also offers a Mobile Solutions Bundle for Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM). The Mobile Solutions Bundle is comprised of XenMobile MDM and CloudGateway and eliminates the need for multiple point solutions from other vendors. 

This bundle combines industry-leading MDM with innovative mobile application management and delivers five key (EMM) capabilities.

LANDesk & Spoon Software to Partner for Application Virtualisation

Spoon, a leading developer of application and desktop virtualisation technology, today announced a partnership with LANDesk Software. This partnership will integrate Spoon’s application virtualisation capabilities with LANDesk Management Suite, providing IT organisations the ability to utilise the robust agent infrastructure of LANDesk to deploy virtualised application packages to endpoints.

Citrix Launches XenClient Enterprise 4.1

At the recent Synergy 2012 in San Francisco, Citrix announced the acquisition of Virtual Computer and plans to release XenClient Enterprise.  Just a few weeks later, we’re pleased to announce the general availability of this exciting new offering – the first release to combine market-leading client virtualization technologies from Citrix and Virtual Computer. (See video by Dan McCall, formerly CEO of Virtual Computer, now VP of Product Marketing & Management for XenClient).

Moreover, XenClient Enterprise is now included within XenDesktop Enterprise and Platinum.  This means that customers with licenses to XenDesktop Enterprise or Platinum gain immediate access to XenClient Enterprise.

Citrix XenClient Enterprise extends the benefits of desktop virtualization to corporate laptops and makes PCs more manageable, reliable, and secure.  As a part of XenDesktop, it enables users to switch between local and hosted VMs with ongoing synchronization of apps and data (through ShareFile), allowing users to work on their laptop and then seamlessly switch to their mobile phone or tablet for convenient access to their desktop, apps, and data (Follow-Me-Apps & Follow-Me-Data).

Some highlights of the new capabilities in this release include:

Easier to use

• In-guest controls make XenClient feel more like native Windows to end users, so they can manage wireless networks, mouse settings, and other controls from within Windows, and IT can hide the hypervisor from less sophisticated users.
• Automated over the air upgrades let XenClient update itself with no intervention needed from the end user.
• A  ’Connect’ environment for quick-boot access to the web, with Google Chrome included.

State Notifier has been a much anticipated release from MarXtar. State Notifier extends LANDesk Management functions by adding real-time state updates from managed devices. State updates allow a clear picture of device oline or offline state, whether users are currently logged into a device, and also whether those devices are actively being used.

LANDesk Inventory is updated real-time to reflect device states allowing the utilisation of state information in LANDesk tasks and policies to improve targeting and success rates. In addition, information is invaluable to support operators and alerting functions notify administrators of changes in state for monitored systems.

VMworld 2011, Las Vegas, August 29, 2011 — Virtual Computer, the market leader in intelligent desktop virtualization (IDV), today announced the availability of NxTop® 4.  With this new release, IT departments are equipped for the first time with a desktop virtualization solution that offers both centralized and distributed storage options for virtual machines while still utilizing the enormous computing power at the PC end-point.  By combining network-based storage with a stateless client-side hypervisor, Virtual Computer’s customers can now keep all their data in the data center, but deliver a high-fidelity desktop experience at a fraction of the cost of server-hosted VDI.

The underpinnings of this technology were first introduced to the market in 2009 by Lenovo, which is now working with Virtual Computer to extend the solution and deliver it on NxTop (see related news). As part of the collaboration, Lenovo provided core technology and patents that bring this technology to a broad set of Lenovo computers and PCs powered by 2nd generation Intel® Core™ vPro™ processors.  Lenovo customers can now benefit from NxTop’s native PC performance, seamless user experience and zero-touch PC deployment through a Lenovo custom factory install. NxTop 4 on Lenovo Think-branded PCs will be demonstrated in Virtual Computer’s booth #1164 this week at VMworld 2011 in Las Vegas.

“Virtual Computer’s NxTop offers extensive flexibility by allowing our Information Technology department to centralize and streamline the management of images, and leverage the same image templates for multiple deployment models, irrespective of the data being stored locally, on a remote storage array, or on a fully encrypted hard drive,” said Aaron Caine, CIO of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts.  “In addition, NxTop’s management console allows the support of a variety of deployment scenarios – from shared computers to fully customized laptops for our mobile work force.”

A Better Approach to VDI

NxTop 4 turns VDI on its head by harnessing the power of end-point PCs for execution rather than requiring major investments in server farms.  NxTop 4 includes the following new capabilities:

• Hot-Desking on Stateless End-Points: Deployment option that provides fast near-native performance by harnessing the power of local execution while data is hosted on a storage array, providing a high-performance and low-cost alternative to server-hosted VDI for use cases such as hot-desking, or where data is not permitted to leave the data center.
• VMware vSphere/ESXi and Citrix Xen Support: Production support for a broad set of server virtualization platforms including VMware vSphere/ESXi and Citrix Xen, allowing IT departments to roll out NxTop management servers as appliances into their existing virtualized server infrastructure.
• Server VMs on PC Infrastructure:  Ability to centrally create, provision, and patch virtual Server 2008 instances on PC infrastructure, enabling companies to leverage underutilized desktop PCs in remote offices to run server operating systems.  Powerful shared image management capabilities allow for failsafe one-to-many patching with built-in rollback that eliminates the risk to production environments.
• Green Computing: Remote power management policies enable IT departments to control end-user laptop and desktop power usage from a central management interface, driving down power costs for end-point devices.  Local execution dramatically reduces the need for server infrastructure even when data is hosted centrally in a storage array, slashing data center power and cooling costs.
• Large Scale Enterprise Installer: The large scale enterprise installer allows IT departments to install NxTop Engine to tens or hundreds of thousands of PCs in a distributed environment across any number of branch offices without visiting a single PC.
